Turn Your XBox into a Media Center
Posted on Friday, February 17 @ 14:56:35 PST by lincomatic

Audio & Video Tips I've been looking for a cheap way to get a quiet media box, which can stream audio & video from a PC server over a network. While there are lots of UPnP solutions, out there, such as D-Link's MediaLounge, I've found most of them to be too expensive, given the limited capabilities, and possible quick obsolescence...

Today, I stumbled across an article on how to turn an XBox into a media center:

How to Go From Xbox to Xbox Media Center in 30 minutes

What's interesting about this article is that it doesn't require you to install a modchip in your XBox, and it purportedly works with any first generation XBox, no matter the region.

XBox Media Center (XBMC) is an open source program which lets you stream video, audio, and photos to an XBox. As an added bonus, it also can play media directly from the XBox's local drives. This capability alone makes it more flexible than a UPnP client, which can only play media across a network.

I'm going to look into this solution and see if it's a cost-effective way to go. Anyone who's had experience with it, please post a comment.
