HOWTO: Enable Open Auth WEP in Omnifi

Anonymous writes "Although Omnifi Support says that shared key authentication is the only WEP mode supported by the D-Link WiFi adapters bundled with the DMP-1/DMS-1 due to a hardware limitation, it's simply not true. You don't have to compromise your network's security just to get these machines connected.
Months ago, I asked Omnfi support if it was possible to use open auth
instead of shared key WEP, and they told me that the D-Link hardware only
supported shared key. They told me it that the hardware didn't support it.
What's bad about shared key WEP is that it's a lot less secure then open
auth.

Now, I knew that to be patently false, because all PRiSM-based wifi adapters
support open auth, and after I figured out how to use the D-Link in XP, I
even verified that open auth worked in XP.
At the time, I couldn't figure out how to get it working on the Omnfi stuff.
Today, I finally got it working.
Here's how to do it:
1) rlogin to your DMP/DMS1 box as root
2) #export AuthType='opensystem'
3) /sbin/saveenv
4) switch your AP over to open auth
5) reboot your Omnifi or hot unplug/plug the wlan adapter.
The settings are saved to flash, so they are persistent, and will survive
power cycling.
Thanks to Dan for pointing out that I was looking for open system, not open
key, and thanks to Lum
for posing a question about saving environment variables to flash, which led
to the discovery of saveenv.
