HOWTO: Use a USB Pen drive with the OmniFi DMP1
Posted on Sunday, May 01 @ 02:35:32 PDT by lincomatic

OmniMedia OmniFi One thing that I've thought would be cool is if it were possible to use portable USB flash storage devices such as USB pen drives or CF cards plugged into USB card readers with the DMP1. My previous attempts to use a USB pen drive with the DMP1 failed because SimpleCenter refused to recognize the device; thus, I couldn't sync my music into it. Tonight, I suddenly had a new idea, and it's so easy, I wonder why I didn't think of it before...

While SimpleCenter can't recognize USB Mass storage devices other than hard drives, the DMP1 can! So how can you get the music into a USB pen drive? It's kind of cumbersome, but it's only a 2-step process.

First, sync your music into a USB hard drive following my instructions in my HOWTO: Use an External Drive on the OmniFi DMP1 article. Next, just copy the /usr directory from the synced drive to your USB pen drive. Next, plug it into the back of your DMP1 and boot it up; it will use the media on the external drive instead!

I have tested this process on a Kingston USB flash drive with success. I also tried my Ziosoft 9in1 card reader with an SD card, and the DMP1 got into and endless loop trying to initialize the drive. I think this is because DMP1 got confused by the fact that the card reader shows up as 2 separate drives; it should work with any single drive USB Mass Storage device. Therefore, you should be able to use SD/CF/etc cards with a card reader. Please post your own experiences as comments below.

If I ever finish my C++ SimpleCenter replacement program, I will make sure it works with any USB mass storage device. In the meantime, hopefully, some Java hackers will figure out how to modify SimpleCenter to recognize any USB Mass Storage device instead of just hard drives.
