HOWTO: Use an External Drive on the OmniFi DMP1
Posted on Thursday, April 07 @ 13:37:15 PDT by lincomatic

OmniMedia OmniFi It's well known that you can plug the OmniFi DMP1's cartridge into the back of the DMS1 and use it as a media source instead of connecting to a uPnP server through your network. I've tried to coax the DMS1 to use other USB drives without success, but with the DMP1, I hit paydirt...

As usual, OmniFi support takes the easy way out, and makes the claim that the USB ports on the back of the DMP1 are unusable for any purpose besides the wireless sync. However, if you take a properly prepped USB drive and plug it into the back of the DMP1 before turning it on, the unit will use the external drive as the media library instead, and ignore its internal drive. Here is the procedure for installing an external drive on the DMP1:

1) Obtain a USB hard drive (NOTE: I have not been successful in getting SimpleCenter to recognize USB flash pen drives or card readers. Your device must look like a hard drive to SimpleCenter. If SimpleCenter can detect your drive, then you're good to go.). I bought a cheap USB 2.0 IDE drive case for about $10 and put in a laptop hard drive. You can find them easily on eBay (search "usb drive case"). What's nice about mine is that it's bus powered, so no external power supply is needed (on the other hand, it needs 2 USB ports, so the wireless adapter has to be unplugged while it's in use).
2) Plug the USB drive into your computer, and format it with a FAT32 file system. In XP, you can open a command prompt and type:

format d: /fs:FAT32

substitute the proper drive letter for the d:.
3) Copy the /usr/root.xml file out of your DMP1 cartridge. For convenience, you can use mine instead.
4) Put root.xml into a text editor and find the serialNumber and UDN tags. If you compare the numbers, you'll find that the last digits of the UDN are the same as the serial number. Just change at least one digit in the serial number, and then copy that to the UDN as well. The UDN is how SimpleCenter keeps track of unique devices. If you skip this step, it will think your DMP1 cartridge and this new drive are the same device.
5) Create a /usr directory on your new drive, and copy the new root.xml to it.
6) Restart SimpleCenter so that it will scan and see the new device. You should now see a new device in the Device tab with the new serial number. If SimpleCenter can't see it, then you're using an incompatible USB drive
7) Sync your music into the drive the same way you would do it for a DMP1 cartridge. Select the device, click the Synchronization tab, and then the Synchronize Now button.
8) Plug the new drive into the back of the DMP1, power cycle it, and enjoy the music from your new external drive.

Unfortunately, a drive prepared in this fashion does not work w/ the DMS1, which would be much more useful to me. If someone figures it how to get it to work w/ the DMS1, please let me know.
